Ryde 4 Tyler James - September 12, 2010
September was already a busy month for the club but an open ride to raise funds was added into the club calendar after a decision by our Vice president Warren Hayes (Wazza) to continue to try and raise funds and awareness of the dreadful children’s disease Neuroblastoma. Tyler James , a sufferer of this illness, and his family had already been guests of the DOCNSW at Club Marconi and when we have had displays. Parents of children who wanted to hop up on one of Wazza’s bikes or our pocket bike, always a great photo opportunity, were asked if they wouldn’t mind contributing a gold coin to this cause.
This ride was a much bigger affair. Riders and pillions paid to ride and for that would receive food, drink, and be in the raffle for some good prizes. There would be a free rock concert at the end of the ride outside Penrith Ducati. Wazza and his crew of DOCNSW Members spent much of Saturday setting up and the local take away food outlet, called “The Chicken Man” was to cater for the large number of riders expected. Advertising had been given to various bike shops and made it into some of the club calendars. This ride was not restricted to DOCNSW members although in the end, they were definitely in the majority.
Sunday Sept 12th thankfully was fine and dry as we set up in the upper carpark at Stanwell Tops. Lesley and I took registrations and Gina Smith was down in the lower carpark spruiking the ride to the many riders that gather there on the weekend. We managed to upset a tourist bus, which was obviously used to setting up for morning tea there. He had to stay outside.
Wazza had gained the offer of a Chevy Camaro with an open top which had been set up for Tyler and his Mum’s trip to Penrith. Tyler’s dad was on Wazza’s Hypermotard. Eventually we rode off heading toward Picton. Riders stayed together mostly and eventually when we hit some real traffic at the corner of Picton and Menangle road we came to a dead stop. The Menagle road was like a carpark. Some riders got over the intersection and waited, and waited as only a few bikes at a time could get across. We did wonder if there had been a prang on the Hume and traffic had been diverted, there was so much. We later found out there was Motocross event being held just down to road in Menangle and every man and his dog were on the way to it.
We were hoping to get past the jam soon then we saw guys off their bikes pushing the Camaro through the intersection. It had broken down. Considering all the traffic, it was a lousy place to stop, but considering all the riders, there were lot of hands to help push and scratch their heads over the cause. Thankfully there was a small area at the side in which we could gather also The NRMA was needed obviously so Tyler and his Mum moved in Gina’s car and the group moved off leaving the Camaro to await the NRMA. It was a steady ride then into Penrith from the South and other than some more traffic there, it was a quick ride to our meeting place. Gary and Les had already set up the tent with some T-shirts for sale.
With fantastic prizes donated by the many Sponsors, much excitement was had when the winners of the raffles were announced and the winners were:
Genevieve Gomes; Gianni Guist; Glenn Hibberd; Tim Johnston; Bob Gee; Phredd Maloney; Andrew Dunn; Mark Bonser; David O’Malley; Gordon Bogg; All Van Kraanen; Gina Smith; Tyler James; Glen Hibberd and Mark Bonser having arrived minutes before the draw, were quickly whisked over to buy raffle tickets and promptly both won valuable prizes.
