What brand and weight oil is best. Synthetic or mineral etc. Oils ain't oils; stick to factory recommendations on brand and weight. Synthetic or Mineral, who can you trust? Man or "the Earth" it's up to you. Change oil and filters at correct intervals, when the engine is hot it's easy. If your not clocking up too many Ks. Change the oil twice a year (before summer and before winter). Oil is cheap insurance for an engine change it, or you are a thingy HEAD and don't deserve what's between your legs! Dave.

I got to know my local shell servo owner and he was prepared to order in any oil i wanted, this may or may not work for you guys but always worth a try. it cost a couple of hundred for a barrel but saves you hundreds in servicings, lets face it, for a crappy mineral oil change that the deallers use and charge $100 a pop, no thanks, do it myself with the recommended oil.
hope this helps. Rats

So Rats666 are you going to let the cat out of the bag and tell us the shell servo or keep us guessing. cheers Nev My local shell is @ Culburra Beach, i just dropped down spoke to the owner/employees and asked if they would order it in and he said no worries, just needed to give him the details and he chased the rest and gave me price easy as that, and if you are wondering, for the SS i use Shell Advance Ultra 4T, why?(used mobil 1 in commodore : because i am anal and like to stick to brands that are recommended by the bike OEM, dont need to, i just do..... and as Agip oils no longer exist in Aust (or are affiliated with Ducati), I am not about to purchase a can of that stuff from overseas and pay through the nose, any fully synthetic or semi, will suffice in "real life", as long as you change it regularly as mentioned earlier. All common sense really, if you ride hard or treat your bike as a daily commuter change oils on or before the K's when due, if its a garage dweller and only sees the light of day when your mates come round at xmas for bbq, then every three - six months or after rides. ;D I must add i am no expert but this is just what i do and have learnt from others.

i am a keen supporter of Castrol oil having used castol in my daihatsu cherade which travelled 420000 km with original motor and still going strong when i sold it. Castrol only make lubricants, nothing else. Castol site list the sport classic 1000 to use a mineral base oil Castrol Activ 4T. Shell do not even list the SC1000 just the Multistrada which recomand Advance Ultra 4. I read on the net that if you change your oil regular before the required interval the use of mineral oil is quite alright, but if you do the oil change when specified the use of Synthetic oil is recomanded. The association between Shell and Ducati in my opinion is purelly business association rather that best lubrication. I bolieve that if you prefer a particular oil brand and follow the manufacturer specification you can not go wrong. Well i suppose you will never know.

did the oil and filter{35000ks) on mondays public holiday, who wants to ride when its double demerits ,and holiday traffic anyway.I have had the same dramas with the book recommending a certain Shell product, but cant find any where.Been using with no dramas a CASTROL fully synthetic on the 999,that i get from Frasers[they recommended it].I dont need the brain damage for the couple of dollars i might have saved if it went bang, for putting the wrong thing in.At the end of the day,the regular changes of oil is cheap compared to an engine rebuid.Ive seen enough cars go bang due to lack of maintenance, one in particalar had its original oil that it left the factory still at 80 000ks.,it was more tar than oil.......john

something I was told (by a mechanic) and to keep in mind also is, if you change between a fully synthetic (like Shell Ultra 4T) and a semi or mineral, use an engine flush and the semi-synthetic oils for a couple of changes, as the full syntetic will leave a protective residue on the components (like teflon) and the cheap mineral oils wont lubricate the engine components properly, it is always better to change from mineral (or semi synth) to fully synthetic but not vice-versa. ie if you use a fully synthetic oil - stick to it(excuse the pun) ;D
